EDUCATION, OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY

Vulcan strongly believes environmental protection and economic growth are not mutually exclusive, and if implemented with a long-term view can be mutually reinforcing. An essential component to achieving this aim is an active and educated public. We leverage our film production company, charitable foundation and other assets to inform and inspire the public about biodiversity, human impacts on the environment and sustainability practices.

Strange Days on Planet Earth
Vulcan Productions produced the first four episodes of an award winning series with National Geographic entitled Strange Days on Planet Earth which explores how all living species on the planet are interconnected. To learn more, go to www.vulcanproductions.com.


Boiling Point
Vulcan Productions also made Boiling Point, a short video about society’s resistance to change an unsustainable and environmentally-damaging energy policy. The video was featured on PBS’ Planet Forward.

Environmental Education The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has funded youth education projects with a number of Pacific Northwest organizations, including: Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center: An urban wetland park in Seattle where naturalists lead wetland field study programs for school groups as well as children and their families. IslandWood: An environmental learning center on Bainbridge Island, WA for children and families. Alaska Youth for Environmental Action: An Anchorage-based program that employs local teens to work in the city’s parks, develop an appreciation for nature and expose them to the benefits of civic engagement. ZooCorps: A program which trains and supervises teen volunteers to provide conservation education to young children at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.
